DRIFTERS: Left or Right? How do you correct it?

Thursday, January 4, 2007, 01:24 PM EST [General]

there is nothing in the rule book that says that you have to walk straight on your aproach.  However, as a guideline to good bowling, it says you must?  how do you correct drifting?

my daughter does not drift by eight boards to the left.  she walks to the left and by the time she reaches the foul line, she's out eight boards sometimes 10.  how do you make soemone walk straight?

She could be opening up her shoulders. If she is then you can try and get to close them. Something else you could do is have her walk the tight rope. Not a real tight rope like 30 feet in the air but like one would walk for a DUI test. You never said if she was a righty or lefty. If she is a lefty and drifting left then there is a real problem. If on the other hand (pun intended) she is a righy and drifting left then as Kellie said "I dont know too many bowlers who dont occasionally drift a few boards. If it is not hurting her bowling leave it be... "

Just tell her to consintrate on the board she's on and just walk twords that spot.

If drifting isn't hurting your game, I wouldn't worry to much about it. If you feel it is, this is how I corrected mine (from help of a 'so called' friend, j/k he really is a friend). He said I drifted 5-7 boards, I said 'No way I drift THAT much'. He told me to stand 15 and put a rag on the approach at 10. I did my normal approach, stepped on the rag and fell flat on my butt. Happened ONCE, I never drifted again. Sounds cruel, but my average went up 7-8 pins after that.

Drift is bad... when it is a true drift. However, when you normally end up 5 boards left shot after shot then it is consistant. And consistancy is the name of the game. This is also dependant on the type of ball you are trying to throw. From your post I would have to assume your daughter is left handed and trirs to swing the ball. She might possible be "walking to her mark" which itself is a perfectly acceptable approach. A lot of coaches are going to the walk to the mark (its still a straight line, but not straight with the boards)
If you have the ability to, look to the Feb 2007 issue of Bowling This Month, and the first article from Susie Minshew covers this whole topic.

Well now...thats a tough one....my daughter is what i call "High Plaines Drifter"...starts out going to swing the ball...and by time shes at the line shes going down and in....best i can tell ya is to when you practice....take a long stick....and lay it a couple boards right of her right foot ( If she's right handed)...i think curing it is going to take a concentrated effort....meaning it's going to have to be something she trains herself to do. Being a new bowler...thats one thing i really dont have problems with....don't ask me why...one reason could be that i start with my left foot and remain kinda sideways during my approach straighteneing out at deleivery...now im certain there's a long time bowler out there that cringes when he hears that....but i don't drift...thats about all i can say!
